STAC NOTE STAC NOTE
USING INTERNET PROTOCOL (TCP/IP) AND REACHOUT
(Applies to ReachOut version 5.X)
STAC FAX 8509 (11/95)
-----------------------------------------------------------------
BACKGROUND
You may use an Internet Protocol (IP) and ReachOut together. Two
types are supported: In DOS use FTP Software's TCP/IP. In Windows
use Windows Sockets (TCP/IP for Windows.) You may also use FTP's
TCP/IP in Windows if you configure it as noted below. The
ReachOut user's Guide covers using ReachOut with TCP/IP. This
document addresses some additional configuration issues. Note
that ReachOut is not an Internet provider. To use ReachOut over
the Internet, you must make the connection via your Internet
provider, then invoke ReachOut.
Using TCP/IP
1. Please note that the only protocol supported in DOS is FTP
Software corporationÆs TCP/IP.
2. Use the instructions in the ReachOut User's Guide, chapters
7 and 9 to configure and use TCP/IP or Windows Socket
services.
3. If one system, Host or Viewer, is in FTP's TCP/IP, the other
system must be using the same protocol. Or if one system is
using Windows Sockets, the other system must also be using
Windows Sockets. You cannot establish a ReachOut session
between one system running FTP's TCP/IP and another running
Windows Sockets.
4. If you use FTP's TCP/IP from a DOS session in Windows, you
must invoke ReachOut's FTP executable file before starting
Windows. Start TCP/IP, then run the file RCHFTP.EXE. Then
start Windows and make the connection as usual.
Making Callbacks
If you wish your Host to make a callback to the Viewer, you must
configure the Host to callback to the IP address, and not the
computer name. This also has the advantage of being much more
secure than using only the computer name.
1. After configuring ReachOut for an Internet connection, open
the Host.
2. Choose to Edit Passwords. After entering the User Name and
Password desired, enter the IP address in the Callback
field.
